Easter Eggs

Here at Fashuvia we still take joy in dyeing Easter eggs (a little childish maybe, but it brings back great memories). Well as it turns out the Easter Eggs are really good for us!

Benefits of Eggs
- forget about the carrots, an egg a day is great for the eyes and will help fight diseases like macular degeneration and can reduce the risk of cataracts
- eggs are high in protein, amino acids, choline(great for the brain), and the good kind of fat
- the best yet, eating eggs will leave you with great hair and nails

Here are some creative ways to use eggs
- here at Fashuvia during lent on Friday's we throw hard boiled eggs in with some spaghetti sauce
- how about scrambling some eggs with onions and tomatoes
- poach an egg and throw it on top of a salad
- and for dessert make a custard by mixing 4 eggs, a cup of sugar, 2 cups of milk, a teaspoon of flour and poring into a pie crust and baking at 350 for 45 minutes

The x crush rule!!!!

I was going through my closet, and looking online at tips for organization. I thought I knew them all but needed an extra push to throw things away that I know I didn't need... then I found it "The X, crush rule!" Here is how it goes, If you ran into your X or crush in the particular item, would you feel confident or want to duck and cover? Well, turns out, I would feel embarrassed a lot, I definitely owned a Hawaiian button up from the Gap and a white linen skirt with sequin from Limited Too!!!

This story is funny and educational, TRY IT OUT TODAY!!! You'll be so happy you did.

Courage

Remember your first job interview, or your first day of school? You were scared to DEATH, but eventually, the more first day's of school that pasted, and the more interviews you took on, the less scary they became. Remember the feeling, "I just want to run out of here, I am about to puke!?" Well, courage brought you through those times. "Courage is being scared to death.. and saddling up anyway. "~John Wayne. It is so important to use fear as motivation rather than an excuse to back down. "Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear." ~ Ambrose Redmoon. The more you feel nervous or out of your comfort zone, the more you should be so proud of yourself for trying something new and getting out there! Everyday you push through a scary moment, whether it be in your career or personal life, give yourself a pat on the back, because above all else, you made it through when you had the chance to run! "There can be no courage unless you're scared!" ~Eddie Richenbacker. We at Fashuvia challenge you to be brave, for the rest of your life! When you get fearful or scared, tell yourself "I can and WILL make it through, and the next time, it will be easier." Without using fear as a push into something new, you will never move forward in your life and may miss great opportunities. If you don't get the job, contract, date, so what! You were brave and you tried, which is an accomplishment in and of itself!
"Above all, challenge yourself. You may well surprise yourself at what strengths you have, what you can accomplish." ~Cicile Springer

Next week you can feel super confident by being our Fashionista Friday!!!! :) Don't forget to submit your picture and information!!!
Say hello to Jessica Jones, the ninth finalist in LVCMag's "Avenue Debut Grand Giveaway" contest. She describes her personal style as "classic chic or putting a new spin on the basics." Always reinventing herself, Jessica doesn't shop for labels; she shops for cute clothes!

With an undeniable passion for fashion, she-along with one of her girlfriends-decided to start a blog titledFashuvia, which focuses on a medley of fashion and lifestyle topics and, more importantly, how women can live an inspired life.

In this photo, she's wearing a sweater and tank from Charlotte Ruse, Steve Madden shoes, Ann Taylor Loft scarf, leggings from a kiosk in the mall, and Goodwill aviators. Undoubtedly, she's a pro at mixing and matching, which translates to her resourceful style.

Her resourcefulness doesn't stop there, however. Jessica juggles both a career and an 18-month-old son. In between his naps and after bedtime, she works out of her home as a marketing consultant.

"I am a very motivated person. I try to fit as much into a day as humanly possible while not taking away from time with my son."

Her mantra? Living life to the fullest and, of course, having fun. If being a full-time mom and business woman weren't enough, she finds time to volunteer at the Delaware YWCA, where she helps lower income ladies and their children build better lives. To top it off, she even runs marathons. "I am also an avid runner and have completed several half marathons with three scheduled for this year."

A tenacious young woman, Jessica strives to live her life to the fullest. "I have a lot of dreams and know that my passion and work ethic will get me through." Her long-term goals include writing a book and starting a magazine.

When asked how she exemplifies the Cherished Life, she states, "In my opinion, I live the cherished life by never taking a moment for granted and always striving to do my best. I find that whenever I'm scared or get nervous, I use it to motivate me and conquer my fears."

An inspiration to women everyone, she leaves them with this piece of advice: "It is so important to have your fears motivate you as opposed to running from them."

A breath of fresh air? We think so!

Tiffany vs. Silpada

Thrifty isn't just a word, it's a lifestyle! This week Fashuvia hosted a Silpada Party to compare their silver jewelry to Tiffany's, and let us tell you, we were SHOCKED! We expected some rickety jewelry with no real weight or quality, and what we found was the complete opposite! Silpada jewelry is the best of the best! And in comparison to Tiffany's, is the same exact highest quality sterling silver (.925) and actually, the pieces hold more weight, which means great quality!

In comparison, the Tiffany Bead bracelet is $185.00 and is lighter with less presence than the Silpada version which looks exactly the same, and of the same quality, but is only $74.00.   The matching earrings? $24.00 at Silpada and $100.00 at Tiffany's.
Tiffany's is also famous for their heart designs, and Silpada has a very similar design! The Tiffany heart clasping link bracelet is a whopping $500.00 and the Silpada sterling silver heart bracelet is only $49.00!

Tiffany's also carries a 1837 collection concave ring which is $225.00, where the Silpada version is only $50.00

Finally, Tiffany's carries an organic looking cuff which is called the Elsa Peretti Bone Cuff and is $725.00!! The Silpada version? only $144.00

Silpada truly is quality! At Fashuvia we are all about a bargain, as long as the quality is there! This isn't your cheap costume jewelry, these are investment pieces that have a LIFETIME warranty and will be replaced anytime for FREE, Tiffany's offers no such service. A dear friend of Fashuvia actually turned us on to Silpada and became a sales representative after falling in love with their quality and prices! Check out her site and feel free to order through her!

Tasteful Tuesday: Healthy Salad's

Many of you have days when you want to eat a bit healthier so you opt for a salad, well be careful because all salads are not created equal.

Starting with the salad bar:
- DO pile on the raw veggies
- DO take plenty of dark lettuce (arugula, romaine, baby spinach)
- DO NOT indulge in too much iceberg lettuce
- DO NOT load the salad with the dry noodles, croutons, bacon bits, sunflower seeds
- DO NOT indiscriminately pick a dressing, this could ruin the whole meal and leave you better off having just having a hamburger - instead try sprinkling the salad with lemon juice or try adding fresh fruit for added flavor
- if you use dressing DO choose a vinaigrette

And when you use the drive thru try these options (beware some are surprising)

at McDonald's get the Bacon Ranch Salad with Grilled Chicken (the key here is use as little dressing as possible)

Wendy's: Mandarin Chicken Salad

Burger King: Tendergrill Chicken Garden Salad

Stay away from Wendy's Chicken BLT Salad - your better off with the burger

Rejection comes in all forms

E-Harmony.com. . sounds so alluring, everyone on the commercials is so happy and in love. . so after being rejected from a loser I thought. . "why not give E-Harmony a try?!?! My inbox will be flooded!". . Day 1, I receive an e-mail "Matt sent you a message!" "OH HOW POPULAR AM I, I KNEW IT!!!!," I said to myself, so I logged into my account and there it was, "Matt has cut off all communication with you, reason: other."

From the lips of a genius

Coco Chanel: A woman we can all learn a thing or two from. She embodied elegance and grace and always knew what was most important. "In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different." Always remember that standing out is a good thing! Being part of the crowd makes you forgettable, never be afraid of being yourself!!! I always found it hard to accept myself, and still struggle with it today. Sometimes I feel so much different than everyone else, but this quote always brings me back to reality. It is so great that I am different because I am just that, Unique! To be unforgettable is a great thing, never be afraid of who you are, and most importantly, never apologize for being that person. "The best color in the world is the one that looks good on you." Stick with what you know and love, don't go for trendy duds, be chic and classic, and most importantly, comfortable in your own skin!!

At Home Pedicure

As summer gets closer our feet could use a little pick me up. Here at Fashuvia we have come up with an easy at home routine that will have your feet flip-flop ready in no time!

1. Remove polish

2. Soak feet in hot water and for added relief add epsom salt or an organic essential oil

3. Scrub with a pedi-file or pumice stone (be sure to take your time with this step it is crucial)

4. Use an exfoliating scrub on feet and legs, Saint Ives Apricot Scrub is a favorite at Fashuvia

5. Use a thick cream moisturizer on legs and feet to lock in the moisture

6. Apply cuticle oil to the nails and push back with a cuticle stick that can be found at local drug stores

7. Clip and file nails to desired length, making sure not to cut too short

8. Remove oil from nails by going over them once more with polish remover

9. Apply favorite polish (don't forget to apply a base coat and a top coat)

10. Pedicure takes 2 hours to fully dry so lay down and relax

Spring Wardrobe Guidelines

Spring 2010 Wardrobe Guidelines!

This week at Fashuvia we researched a TON of designers and fashion magazines to get the complete spring wardrobe guide!

  • For a business look, wear skinny suiting pants with a flow-y romantic top and a matching jacket for a complete sophisticated, stylish Spring look.
  • Always throw on a jacket, whether it be a cardigan, leather jacket, or tailored businesses blazer for an instantly classy edge.
  • If you are facing a long day, don't  be afraid to wear flats, whether it be boots or just a plain flat, they are always in style and always very chic.
  • Wear tights! Yes it is spring, but a nice opaque tight always adds an air of class.
  • Color and prints are always a do for spring, but make sure to not over-do it! Either wear one bright colored piece or a pattern, never both! If the pattern is bright, fantastic! but keep the rest of the outfit simple.
  • For an amazing Spring hair style, pull hair back into a low ponytail, then twist into a knot and secure with bobby-pins, add an amazing head band and go directly from day to night.
  • Remember, if the outfit is a "WOW" make sure your makeup is minimal, the only goal for spring is to look as though you have a flawless face, no dramatic liner or colors needed. Nude and sexy!

Thrify Thursday

Hey Ladies!!!
Sorry for the late post, Fashuvia has been very hectic today!! We will be personalizing our blog shortly and are getting everything in order.. so be expecting a lot more personal pictures. . we are so excited for this next milestone!!!

This Thursday we are focusing on the top five items to buy consignment!!!

For those of you who are unfamiliar with consignment, these shops sell gently used clothing and accessories, although they are typically more expensive than your average thrift store, they save you a lot of time by not having to sort through tons of junk to find a treasure!

1. Designer Bags: Designer bags never go out of style and can be found at consignment for a percentage of the price and a great vintage feel.

2. Cardigans: What better way to find an authentic "grandpa sweater," these are so chic when properly warn! pear with a dressy top, skinny jeans, and either flat boots, or flats, for an extra accessory, go for a nude/brown high wasted belt over the open sweater and top, don't be afraid to mix black and brown!!

3. Jewelry: Vintage Jewelry is the ULTIMATE statement piece!!

4. Belts: You can always find great belts at consignment, vintage and designer alike!!! Typically, these belts are high quality but do not have designer prices.

5. Jeans: Consignment jeans are so cheap that they are great to experiment with!! Grab some scissors, bleach, glue, and sequin, and go wild!! You can never mess up a pair of jeans when paired with a simple top and flats!! Whether they are men’s for the "boyfriend look" or skinny jeans, use your creativity and make a statement!!!

Workout Wednesday

Regretting how much you drank on St. Patty's Day?? Here are a few quick tips to burn off the booze!

  • Drinking 8, 16oz glasses of ice water a day and boost your metabolism to burns an extra 100 calories a day, without doing a THING (we love that!)
  • Find a hill near work, and walk it for 13 minutes on your lunch break! (100 calories will be lost.)
  • Don't slouch! Sitting up straight all day, using your core, helps to burn calories, and also makes you look thinner!
  • No matter what you are doing today, if you aren't afraid of looking stupid, raise your arms above your head, when your arms are above your heart, you burn more calories! Try squatting over the toilet, with your arms raised! Mini-workout!!
  • You burn more calories standing up than sitting down! So whenever you have the opportunity to stand, DO IT!
  • Trade your office chair for a firm exercise ball, it will not only improve your balance and posture, but also give you a great core!
  • Whenever you walk, just walk faster (simple right?!)

Tasteful Tuesday

While many enjoy beer on St. Patrick's Day, here at Fashuvia we much prefer to indulge in a martini. Here is a recipe for a fun and refreshing St. Patrick's Day martini:

St. Patrick's Day Martini
2 oz. vodka
1 oz. simple syrup (can buy or see recipe below)
sprig of mint
drop of green food coloring
Combine ingredients in an ice filled shaker and shake! Pour and enjoy

To make your own simple syrup combine 2 parts sugar into 1 part boiling water and stir until the sugar dissolves.

For an extra festive touch try rimming the glass with green sugar (found in your local baking isle).

Manic Monday

Imagine getting rejected by someone you think is a loser!! Well it happened to me. I innocently went out with a guy, as friends, due to the fact that I really wasn't interested in him AT ALL. .  and the next day, never heard from him, which I found bizarre because we are always talking. . I texted his best friend to ask him what the deal was, and he said, "oh you didn't know? He isn't into you!"

Sentiment Sunday

This week we want to focus on helping others, corny sounding? Maybe. But a lot of times we are so consumed with trying to reach our own success that we forget to make a difference in the world. "If you can't feed one hundred people, then feed just one." ~Mother Teresa. As individuals, we sometimes think that we cannot change the world by doing small things, but we can, as Mother Teresa stated, if you can't feed a hundred, just feed one, meaning, that help is help, in all forms, you are making a change in the world!! Next time you have left overs from a dinner, give the meal to a homeless person, or donate supplies or your time to an animal shelter. The love you share will change lives.

"How wonderful is it that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world." ~ Anne Frank. At times, we dream HUGE dreams yet forget the little voices that speak, "smile, open the door for another, let the car merge in front of you." These little tasks, everyday help others. "Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does." ~William James. Everything you do to help another does make a difference. Never be afraid to lend a helping hand. The hardest thing is usually starting a project, but once you bite the bullet and volunteer, or make a donation, you will be more inclined to do it again!

"I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can." ~ Edward Everett Hale. Never forget that you can and will make a difference in the world if you just try! Make sure to keep others in mind this week and donate your time, money, or supplies to those in need. Whether it be homeless people, animals, or a local charity. Even just helping out a  neighbor is a great step in the right direction!!

Check in tomorrow for Manic Monday. . I bet you used to sneak out of your house and think nothing of it. . well so did this girl. . . until. . . .

Sexy Saturday

On Sexy Saturday we will discuss anything that makes you feel sexy and confident! Today's topic?! Fashuvia's favorite make-up products! If you are like most ladies, you hate trying out new make-up products in fear that you're wasting your money on a product that sell the dreams of flawless complexion, fuller lashes, and plumper lips, yet does nothing! Here at Fashuvia, we are constantly trying out new products to give you, the reader, a heads-up on what REALLY works!!

Lip Gloss:

  • Any MAC lip gloss stays on for literally DAYS and looks supple however, it feels very gluey and if you kiss someone, you literally will get stuck. (Keep this in mind for date night, and wear something a little more sheer!
  • C.O. Bigelow, right now we are loving their glosses due to the fact that they smell and taste great, are very watery, and will not stick to your date! You're lips will slide right off. Favorite: Spearmint Mentha Lip Shine, No 1191. This gloss smells and tastes like mint! Great for an after-dinner refresher!!
Mascara:

  • Right now we are (surprisingly) loving Lash Exact by CoverGirl, the wand is very tiny, and we did not expect voluminous results however, the wand is so easily maneuverable for the inner corners and, with a few coats, creates amazing length and volume! On top of this, you cannot beat the prices of CoverGirl!
  • For those who already have long lashes and want to add a little-something-extra, Clinique High Impact Mascara adds a boost of shine and slight thickening.
Blush:

  • The blush we are in love with is by Flirt from Kohl's, and is called "Crazy in Love" from their Peek-a-blush sheer powder cheek color series. This blush is very pink and has a simmer quality that adds radiance and a natural looking glow to the skin.
Eye Shadow:

  • Any MAC eyeshadow is always a safe bet due to their high concentration of pigments, these will give results of the true color in the palette.
  • Avon eyeshadow duo "morph tones" is a great cream shadow that has a gold and peach tone which make for a great look! We like to put a light coating of the gold over the whole eye and the peach in the crease, for a "smokey" daytime look. Be sure to set with a light powder, and do not use heavily fore the cream may build up at the crease over the day.
  • Wet N' Wild has great palettes that are so inexpensive! The colors are very shimmery and last all day!! Try the Sand Castle Palette for great neutral tones that will really make the eyes pop!
  • Almay, palettes designed for your color eye. These also add a great shimmer, and are very complimentary and easy to apply!
  • Estee Lauder Delux Pure Color EyeShadow Palette, this Palette is very shimmer and complementary to all eye colors. We love its staying power and amazing shades.
Foundation:

  • We at Fashuvia prefer powder foundation for the typical daytime look, however it is always great to have a liquid foundation for covering blemishes, or looking flawless at night.
  • Bobbi Brown Liquid Foundation applies great coverage and has a yellow undertone which is natural to the skin, this is great for women of color!
  • MAC Studio Fix Fluid is fantastic for under-eye circles and blemish coverage. We like to mix it with lotion for a daytime look or apply it directly to the skin for a flawless finish. This product is also FPS 15!
  • Bare Minerals from Bare Escentuals is an amazing product that allows you to have even, flawless skin, day or night, without feeling guilty! This product is actually beneficial to the skin and looks very natural. We recommend this product for everyday use, day or night.
Bronzer:

  • Of course MAC bronzer is always a safe bet, applied lightly, it gives a natural glow to the  skin for a great day or night look.
  • The bare Minerals "Warmth" is a great product which again is beneficial to the skin and also gives a natural glow.
Eye Liner:

  • At Fashuvia we are fans of both liquid and powder eye liners. MAC eye pencils are great  for staying power and a high pigment content.
  • Also, another option would be to take any shadow of your choice and spray MAC Fix+ on the powder to turn it into liner, apply with an angled brush and in no time it will dry on the eye as if it were pencil. Also, Fix+ allows the shadow to dry back to it's original state.
Lip Liner:

  • We love MAC lip liner pencils, for their true color and staying power!!
  • Sonia Kashuk lip pencils are also great because they are a cheaper  brand that blend naturally.

Fashionista Friday

Hey Ladies,

We decided to re-create a look straight from the Badgley Mischka runway show for a fraction of the cost.

  • The tank top is $6.50 ($5.85 with a student or military i.d.) from Charlotte Russe.

  • The sweater is $18.00 ($15.00 with a student or military i.d.) from Charlotte Russe.

  • The leggings are $15.99 from a kiosk at the mall (American Apparel has a similar item for $45).

  • The scarf is $34.95 from Ann Taylor Loft.

  • The shoes are Steve Madden (from my closet) but you can find a similar pair from Enzo Angiolini (Starlite) for $79.95 at Nordstrom.

  • The aviators were $1 from Goodwill but you can find some at Urban Outfitters for $10.00.

To fully complete this look paint your nails with a metallic polish like Awaken by China Glaze ($3.99).
To summer-ize the look try pairing with a pair of patent leather sandals.

Be sure to keep accessories to a minimum, try to keep the make-up bare, and to easily switch from day to night pair with a metallic clutch.

Thrifty Thursday

Hey Ladies!

On Thirfty Thursday we focus on any products or treatments that are cheaper than the next!! This week we are focusing on the. . Bore Bristle Body Exfoliation Technique. We are always looking for great body exfoliants but none seem to do the trick, either the product contains little to no exfolation or is way too expensive. . .When doing our research we found a great idea!! A top dermatologist in Cosmo magazine stated that she uses a bore bristle brush before she showers. Every morning, or night, she undresses, and brushes her whole body.

So, we gave it a try. . .we went to Sally Beauty Supply and bought a soft bore bristle brush, which was $5.99 (ask a sales associate to assist you). We rushed home, stripped down and went to it, at first it is a little uncomfortable, and the water in the shower feels a little hotter than normal, but this is a GOOD THING, it means the dead skin is gone and the fresh skin is now at the surface. If the temperature bothers you, just turn it down, and don't forget to mosturize!!

The dermatologist who recommended this assures that the uncomfortable feeling will go away and soon you will be dying to jump out of bed and scrub!!  It not only wakes you up, invigorates the skin, and promotes circulation, but makes your skin baby smooth. . . Fashuvia is not guaranteeing anything, but this regimin has helped the occassional pimples we get on my body to disappear faster!!

Products we love: Oval Boar Bristle Cushion Paddle Brush by Brush Strokes: $5.99 http://www.sallybeauty.com/ .

Moist Hemp Body Butter: $6.99 http://www.sallybeauty.com/ .

Workout Wednesday

Do your legs itch whenever you try to exercise?

In high school I was an avid runner, I even ran two half-marathons. . well as I got older, my activity level dwindled and just recently I decided to get back into the swing of things. . except for one HUGE problem. . every time I started to run, or even walk in excess, my legs started to itch UNCONTROLLABLY, I tried everything, wearing more lotion, wearing spandex, wearing shorts. . nothing would help! I would itch until the point where I could not STAND IT anymore and had to stop, mind you this was before I made it around the block even once. . so I did my research.

Apparently a lot of individuals have this itching, and it is the result of an inactive lifestyle. A professional certified trainer was interviewed by cfnews13.com and explained the un-scratchable itch, when active, the capillaries in your legs contract and expand fairly easily, but if you are inactive, they lose elasticity and do not expand as readily as they used to.

For this reason, when you exercise, the nerve endings in the capillaries will transmit the sudden expansion and the brain translated this into an itch! The itching is actually inside the skin, so no matter what you do, you cannot stop itching. . the good news?

After a consistent workout regimen, your capillaries will be running as usual and no more itching!! After a few weeks of scheduled exercise, if the itching does not go away, consulting a doctor would be the best move, due to the fact that there are more serious conditions where itching occurs. . but for the most part, if you just suck it up, you will stop itching, and personally. . I can't wait for the day to come! I will know that my exercise is on the right track and that my capillaries are healthy and running at optimum potential!

Tasteful Tuesday

Pineapple

We thought that since the peak season for pineapple is March through July that we would give you some facts about this fascinating fruit and some fun recipes.

This sweet fruit provides many more benefits than you may think, it is loaded with calcium, potassium, fiber, and vitamin C. It is low in fat and cholesterol and helps to strengthen bones. Pineapple also contains Bromelain which helps loosen mucus and suppress coughs, so the next time you have a cold go pick up some pineapple!

As the weather warms up try throwing some pineapple on the grill, this would be great on its own or throw it in a blender to make a great drink.

Throw a cored pineapple cut into quarters or halves on the grill and brush with vegetable or canola oil until golden brown.

You could also chop up some pineapple and toss with some lime juice and toasted coconut flakes for a refreshing treat.

Roasted Pineapple Milkshake:  (recipe courtesy of Bobby Flay and foodnetwork.com)
Combine 1 cup of ice, 1/2 grilled pineapple, 1/2 cup of pineapple juice, 1/3 pint lemon sorbet, and 1/3 pint of vanilla ice cream in a blender and pulse until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Pour into wine glasses and top with a splash of club soda. (for an added zing add a splash of the liquor of your choice).

All this talk about pineapple and you don't know how to pick the perfect one from the market? Well a ripe pineapple will smell sweet with green crisp leaves.

Manic Monday

Remember when you were a little girl and your mom told you to never talk to strangers? Well, my girlfriend SHOULD have listened. . . .I get a phone call,
"OH MY GOD, I. . . I. . . I JUST GO. . GOT . . ATTACKED!" "WHAT???"
I said, well apparently here's what happened. . . She was walking down 5th Ave, ALONE, and noticed a homeless man in a wheelchair, to her surprise no one was paying him any mind. She stopped and smiled, and then, all hell broke loose!!
"COME HERE LITTLE GIRL,"
he said as she laughed. Here was her mistake! The laughter set him into a RAGE and he dove from the chair onto her back!!! She ran for her life until he miraculously dropped off, hence the out of breath phone call. . the best part she says,
"NO ONE EVEN LOOKED AT ME WHILE THIS MAN WAS ATTACHED TO MY BACK, SCREAMING FOR MY LIFE, AS IF IT WERE NORMAL!"

And you thought you were having a bad day????

Check-in tomorrow for tasteful Tuesday!
