Tasteful Tuesday

Pineapple

We thought that since the peak season for pineapple is March through July that we would give you some facts about this fascinating fruit and some fun recipes.

This sweet fruit provides many more benefits than you may think, it is loaded with calcium, potassium, fiber, and vitamin C. It is low in fat and cholesterol and helps to strengthen bones. Pineapple also contains Bromelain which helps loosen mucus and suppress coughs, so the next time you have a cold go pick up some pineapple!

As the weather warms up try throwing some pineapple on the grill, this would be great on its own or throw it in a blender to make a great drink.

Throw a cored pineapple cut into quarters or halves on the grill and brush with vegetable or canola oil until golden brown.

You could also chop up some pineapple and toss with some lime juice and toasted coconut flakes for a refreshing treat.

Roasted Pineapple Milkshake:  (recipe courtesy of Bobby Flay and foodnetwork.com)
Combine 1 cup of ice, 1/2 grilled pineapple, 1/2 cup of pineapple juice, 1/3 pint lemon sorbet, and 1/3 pint of vanilla ice cream in a blender and pulse until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Pour into wine glasses and top with a splash of club soda. (for an added zing add a splash of the liquor of your choice).

All this talk about pineapple and you don't know how to pick the perfect one from the market? Well a ripe pineapple will smell sweet with green crisp leaves.
